Hello WPW member!

WPW 2017 Updates and Call for Volunteers

Monica VanDieren : 01/15/2017 10:10 am : From the Pres, Uncategorized

I hope you all got to enjoy the 60 degree day we had on Thursday!  It got me looking forward to the 2017 cycling season.

First looking back on the 2016 season, I would like to thank the 2016 leadership team for their great work organizing WPW traditions, but also making strides moving the club forward with the establishment of a Ride with GPS account, updated webpage, expanding the number of rides all around the region, and taking steps to a new club logo and jersey design. In particular I would like to individually thank and recognize the following club members:
  • Steph Burch for leading the Dirty Dozen Training rides and providing invaluable advice for climbing those hills
  • Bob Vano, who served as a Ride Captain in 2016 and helped to organize the very successful Fall and Spring Rallies
  • Jim Logan who has organized the Icicle Bicycle and Ride of Silence for many years.
It is the volunteers like these that make the club what is.  We have several volunteer opportunities and vacancies this year and you can help!
Our first WPW Board Business Meeting of the year will take place on Tues Jan 31 at 7:30pm at Claddaugh Irish Pub, 407 Cinema Dr, Pittsburgh, PA 15203 (with an optional dinner and/or drink starting at 6:30.  Find the menu and pricing here.) The agenda includes:
  •     Treasurer and membership report
  •     2016 Rider Milage and Survey report
  •     Icicle Bicycle recap
  •     Volunteer vacancies and opportunities
  •     Jersey and new logo update
  •     BikePGH report
  •     Fall and Spring Rally planning
  •     Car-pooling to out of town rides (e.g. Pedal the Lakes, Mon Valley Century, etc.)
  •     Other 2017 season planning
All members are welcome to attend the board meeting  (and pre-meeting gathering).  If you cannot make the board meeting and are interested in volunteering, please email us.
Finally, I would like to introduce to you the other 2017 WPW Officers and Board:
Vice President:  Sarah Quesen
Treasurer: Bryan Schmersal
Secretary: De’Anna Caligiuri
Board Members:

  • Al Gaburri
  • Dave Bialoksky
  • Dave Lampe (Pittsburgh Randonneurs)
  • Dave Kasperek
  • Kim Brumbaugh (Membership)
  • Jim Logan
  • Mikhail Evstiounin
We welcome any comments or suggestions as well as your volunteer time to improve the club.
Best regards,
Monica VanDieren
WPW President

WPW 2017

Happy New Year!

We continued our tradition of starting the new year with Icicle Bicycle beginning at REI in Southside Works.  Over 100 riders braved the cold and Steelers’ fans for a ride around town, and several met up at Claddaugh after the ride for socializing, food, and beer.

January 1st also marked the start of the new slate of officers and board members.  We are excited to build on the traditions of the club.  Please follow the link below to report your milage for 2016 and answer a few questions about the club and how we can better serve the needs of the community.

2016 WPW Ride Season Begins

Lance Kennelty : 03/13/2016 7:52 am : Events, From the Pres, Rides, Sponsors, Uncategorized

Welcome all WPW Members,

I am looking forward to riding with you this season.  Because of our mild winter riding has already started.  I see new rides being posted on our calendar daily.  This is terrific!
In the coming days please look for a message from me with an invitation to join our new RideWithGPS Club page.  RideWithGPS Club is a new member-only benefit to help us organize, schedule, and lead rides.
To show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of scheduling and leading rides the club would like to extend a free 2017 membership to any current member for leading 5 or more rides this season.  Rides must be scheduled using our WPW calendar and all the rules for leading rides must be followed including timeliness, courtesy to new riders, safety, following all rules of the road, and using our sign-in sheet with a club insurance liability waiver.
We recognize that people choose to join a club based on the types of rides that fit their schedules, needs, and abilities.  If you don’t find the exact ride you are looking for please consider becoming a ride leader.  Our volunteer efforts have increased this year but we need your help to run our club.  Please consider volunteering your time to help us help you become the rider you would like to be.
There has been a renewed interest in our club and its relationship to our community.  Please look for a email message from me in the next few days asking you to participate in a poll about the club.  We will use this data to help guide the club in the future by finding out what our members opinions are.
Have a great season and I look forward to seeing everyone out there!
